Self Storage Uxbridge Health and Safety Policy
This Health and Safety policy sets out how Self Storage Uxbridge manages the safety and wellbeing of customers, visitors, contractors, removal partners and employees on our premises. Our aim is to provide a safe, clean and well managed storage environment, including during loading, unloading and removals activities.
We are committed to complying with relevant health and safety legislation and to continually improving our safety standards. Everyone using our site shares responsibility for working safely, reporting hazards and respecting the rules and guidance described in this policy.
Policy Objectives
The objectives of this policy are to prevent accidents and injuries, protect health, safeguard property and minimise disruption to customers. We achieve this by assessing risks, implementing control measures, maintaining equipment and facilities, and promoting safe behaviour at all times, especially during manual handling and goods movement associated with storage and removal services.
Management Responsibilities
Senior management at Self Storage Uxbridge has overall responsibility for health and safety performance on site. Management will provide appropriate resources to manage risks, ensure that this policy is implemented, reviewed and updated, and appoint competent persons to oversee day to day safety matters.
Managers will ensure that staff receive relevant training, that written procedures are in place for key activities such as access control, emergency response and handling large or heavy items, and that regular inspections are carried out to maintain a safe environment. Management will also monitor compliance and investigate accidents and near misses to identify lessons learned.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees are required to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Employees must follow company safety procedures, use any equipment or personal protective equipment provided, and immediately report hazards, defects, incidents or near misses to management.
Staff involved in assisting with customer loading, unloading or coordination with removal companies must follow manual handling guidance, use appropriate equipment such as trolleys where available, and avoid lifting loads that are too heavy or awkward without assistance.
Customer and Visitor Responsibilities
Customers, visitors and representatives of removal companies using our facilities are expected to act safely and responsibly at all times. This includes observing signage and instructions, parking and driving carefully on site, keeping fire exits and walkways clear, and using equipment only as intended.
Customers are responsible for ensuring that items brought into storage are safe, do not present an unreasonable risk, and comply with our terms and conditions. Hazardous, flammable or illegal items must not be stored. Any unsafe behaviour, spillages or damage must be reported to staff immediately.
Risk Assessment and Hazard Control
Self Storage Uxbridge conducts risk assessments for key activities and areas, including vehicle movements, loading bays, corridors and access routes, stairways, lifts and storage units. These assessments identify hazards such as slips, trips and falls, manual handling risks, collision risks and fire hazards.
Control measures may include clear signage, marked walkways, appropriate lighting, housekeeping standards, maintenance schedules, safe systems for working at height where applicable, and defined procedures for coordinating with removal services. These controls are reviewed periodically and whenever significant changes are made on site.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a core activity in self storage and removals. To reduce the risk of injury, staff and customers are encouraged to use trolleys or handling aids provided, break down heavy loads into smaller units where possible and use correct lifting techniques, keeping loads close to the body and avoiding twisting.
Any equipment provided for moving goods, such as trolleys or pallet trucks, must be used in accordance with instructions. Defective equipment must not be used and must be reported to staff immediately. Children must not operate handling equipment.
Vehicle Movements and Loading Areas
Designated loading and unloading zones are provided to support safe access to storage units and to facilitate removal vehicles. Drivers must obey onsite speed limits, follow directional signage and take extra care when reversing or operating in busy areas.
Pedestrians should use marked routes where provided and remain vigilant around moving vehicles. Parking must not obstruct fire exits, emergency routes or access to other units. When working with a removal company, customers should ensure that all parties coordinate to keep routes clear and minimise congestion.
Housekeeping and Storage Practices
Good housekeeping is essential for safety. Aisles, corridors and fire exits must be kept clear of obstructions. Items stored within units should be stacked safely, with heavier items at the bottom and lighter, fragile items above. Overloading or unstable stacking that could collapse or block access is not permitted.
Any spillages, breakages or damage to the building or fixtures must be reported immediately so that appropriate action can be taken to remove hazards and maintain safe conditions for everyone.
Fire Safety and Emergency Procedures
Self Storage Uxbridge maintains fire detection and firefighting equipment appropriate to the premises. Fire exits and escape routes must remain unobstructed at all times. Customers and visitors should familiarise themselves with emergency signage and the nearest exit routes when using the site.
In the event of a fire or emergency, everyone on site must follow staff instructions, evacuate promptly and proceed to the designated assembly area. Lifts must not be used during a fire evacuation. No one should re enter the building until authorised to do so by the responsible person or emergency services.
Training, Information and Supervision
Employees receive induction and ongoing training on relevant health and safety topics, including emergency procedures, manual handling, safe customer interaction and the correct use of equipment. Additional guidance is provided where tasks involve higher risks, such as managing busy loading periods or coordinating with removal services.
Health and safety information is communicated through signage, written instructions and verbal briefings. Supervisors monitor compliance and provide support where needed to maintain safe working practices.
Incident Reporting and Investigation
All accidents, injuries, near misses, dangerous occurrences and instances of property damage on site must be reported to Self Storage Uxbridge staff as soon as possible. Details will be recorded and, where appropriate, investigated to determine causes and identify corrective actions.
Where incidents involve vehicles, removal crews or third party contractors, we will cooperate with all parties involved to review circumstances and implement any necessary improvements to prevent recurrence.
Review of this Policy
This Health and Safety policy is reviewed regularly and updated when necessary to reflect changes in operations, legislation or best practice. The most current version is available for customers, visitors and employees to read on request at our premises.
By using our facilities, customers, visitors and removal partners agree to cooperate with Self Storage Uxbridge in maintaining a safe environment for all.
